Former Sun Devil Harris Named South Africa Player of the Year

    Nov. 15, 2011

TEMPE - Arizona State University water polo's Sarah Harris was named as the South Africa water polo Player of the Year at the Telkom Swimming South Africa Annual Aquatic Awards in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Harris, who just wrapped up her final year for the Sun Devils, earned the honor after representing the South Africa National Team at the recent FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China.  There, Harris was the top goal-scorer for the team and tallied goals in each of the team's five games played en route to a 15th place finish.  It was the second World Championship in a row that Harris had paced her team in goals.

Harris scored 17 total goals in the competition which ranked her among the top-20 goal scorers at the event and brought her total of goals scored to 25 between two World Championships.

As a senior for the Sun Devils, Harris scored 39 goals during the 2011 season, which tied with teammates Mariam Salloum and Lynlee Smith at the top of the Sun Devil goals scored list.  She added 26 assists and her 65 points were second on the team.  She also led all Sun Devils in goals scored in MPSF competition with eight.

Harris earned honorable mention honors for the All-MPSF team and finished her career with the Sun Devils with 77 goals in just two seasons on the squad.
